Given the fact that it was Mardi Gras, Tuesday at Upper 90 was in a festive mood for quiz night! Beads were everywhere (undoubtedly all earned in wholesome, modest fun) as our queeps were out celebrating one of our favorite holidays-with-forgotten-meanings the best way they knew how: drinking while thinking! And while a great deal of both was done by all involved, much like the Highlander, there could only be one winner, the topically named Balls Deep in Mardi Gras!

Great job by a three man team! Congrats on the $30 bar tab guys!

Not far behind were the usual suspects, Anne Frank's Hide + Seek Club, two points out of first, but still in the money!

Will these guys ever pay for another drink during quiz night? Stay tuned to find out!

That left a fierce battle for the people's prize AKA best team name. In the end a bit of bribery (in the way of a phone number for the Quizmaster!) turned the tides in favor of Tit$ and Ass - The Mardi Gras Way, shown here already enjoying the spoils of victory in their free pitcher of beer!

Ghost Riding on Valentine's Day!

Neither love, or commercially created expectations of love, nor the fear of a CGI'd Nicolas Cage could keep the queeps away from Upper 90 Sports Pub on Tuesday. In addition to our regularly scheduled rounds of dropping knowledge on Milwaukee, there were also Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance prizes to be given away - both advance movie tickets and tshirts! But before the swag was handed out, there was some quizzing to do!

A might battle was waged, but much like the Highlander, there can be only one quizzing champion! After all was said and done, the team of "Stay Down, You", Said the Preacher Man scored 32 hard fought points and walked away with first place and a $30 bar tab...

Coming in second place was the absolutely massive team of Dumpster Diving Fetal Retrieval Service...

A betting man might've placed money on them winning due to sheer combined brainpower, but alas it wasn't to be. But hey, walking away with a $20 tab is nothing to laugh at.

Finally, the people's prize (aka best team name) went to It's Valentines Day, and All I Got was a Dick in a Box...

Pennsylvania Hospital ("Pennsy") is a hospital in Center City, Philadelphia, affiliated with the University of Pennsylvania Health System ("Penn Health System"). Founded on May 11, 1751 by Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Bond, it was the first hospital in the United States. It is also home to the first surgical amphitheatre and first medical library in America.

The Hospital was originally conceived in 1751 by Dr. Thomas Bond as an institution "for the reception and cure of the sick poor... free of charge," and was funded grace to donations of the people of Philadelphia.

On September 2, 1751, Mathias Koplin donated the first plot of ground for the new hospital.

In 1752, the first (temporary) building was opened on High (now Market) Street. Elizabeth Gardner (a Quaker widow) was appointed Matron.

In 1755, the cornerstone was laid for the East Wing of what would become the hospital's permanent location at 8th and Pine Streets. Patients were first admitted to the permanent hospital in 1756. The site continued to grow through the years with the addition of more wings (such as the West Wing of the building which was built in 1796) and buildings, extra land and further expansion.

In Downtown Milwaukee, Born and Raised…

Something was in the air on Tuesday night as quiz night at the Upper 90 Sports Pub approached. Maybe it was a Super Bowl hangover. Maybe it was the Bucks game going on next door at the Bradley Center. Either way, it took a bit to get the quiz going with new Quizmaster Paul running the show. Oh, but when we did, what a quiz went down! After much dancing (seriously!) and 30 questions, we finally found our winners for the night!

Despite coming in late, Jerry Sandusky’s Child Care Services found themselves in the money. Had they not gotten tripped up by the music bonus round, they might’ve made a serious play for first!

Nice job guys!

Our winners seemed confident from the beginning. With a team name like Big Dick Bastards, that probably surprises nobody. Either way, they still took home first place!

See? Total confidence.

There was a lot of fierce competition for the “People’s Prize” aka best team name, and when the dust settled, 6 Inches (3 In, 3 Out = 6 Inches) came away with the prize and a free pitcher for their effort. We feel a bit bad for their partners though if that’s true!

And also next week, Quizmaster will be giving away free stuff (including advanced screening passes) for the new movie Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance! Details here!

The moonwalk or backslide is a dance technique that presents the illusion of the dancer being pulled backwards while attempting to walk forward. A popping move, it became popular around the world after Michael Jackson executed the dance move during a performance of "Billie Jean" on Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever on March 25, 1983. It subsequently became his signature move, and is now one of the best-known dance techniques in the world.

Dressed in his signature black trousers, silver socks, silver shirt, black-sequined jacket, single sequined glove, and black fedora, Jackson spun around, posed, and began moonwalking backwards (normal direction). Ian Inglis writes that Jackson encapsulated a long tradition of African-American dance movements in that one performance. The audience cheered Michael's moonwalk. Moonwalking received widespread attention, and from then on, the moonwalk became Jackson's signature move for his song "Billie Jean". Nelson George said that Jackson's rendition "combined Jackie Wilson's athleticism with James Brown's camel walk". Michael Jackson's autobiography was titled Moonwalk, and he also starred in a 1989 film titled Moonwalker.

What, what it's quiz night!!

It was the best night of quizzin' yet at the Upper 90 Sports Pub this Tuesday night, as basketball fans poured out of the Bradley Center from the Marquette game and we had a hell of a noisy trivia on the cards!

But as ever the show must go on, and despite all the racket, it did!

Ultimately, with three prizes up for grabs twas Quizmaster veterans Balls Deep... in the Nintendo Virtual Boy that showed that experience pays off as they walked out with the $30 tab...

A reference to the five Nintendo game consoles question!

Second place was taken by another Quizmaster stalwart, as the lads of Argentina may be bigger but Chile's longer rolled in to the quiz having been "kicked out" of the Bradley Center....

We guessing the hooliganisms chants of "who are ya" and "what the fuckin' hell was that" didn't go down too well with the college educated crowd!

A number of other teams featured during the quiz with shout outs going to newcomers Don't drop the SOPA or the PIPA!! and Third Street legends "What what in the butt?"...

We promised them a Milwaukee Wave soccer question next week! Although they got the question about "Craven Cottage" on the evening! Good schtuff!

But ultimately the prize for best name / name with shock value went to Ryan Dunn's Porsche Repair and BBQ...

Last week's winners settled for the "people's prize" in the end.

Upper 90 moves to 9pm show time! Quiz Bowl Sunday

A final reminder that Quiz Bowl II, Milwaukee's sports and pop culture trivia tournament is this upcoming Sunday January 29th! Register your team now!

It was a rather bustling atmosphere at Upper 90 on Tuesday night, as the bar's second trivia event was about to get underway. The quiz saw seven teams compete, although given the later start time, only a few saw it through to the end.

One of those teams was the bar's official football team, aka Honey Badgers Don't Give a Shit! that rolled in with 44 points and a win...

And now given the exodus of players and teams during quiz night, due to the 10pm start, the quiz will move it's start time to 9pm, effective immediately!

The default best team name award went to Fur Burgers, as some of the other teams in contention for that prize didn't stick around for the free stuff to be handed out!...

They seemed more than happy to get their pic on the blog!

Next week - 9pm start - and Ryan will host the entire quiz wearing a sombrero.

the heavily favored Max Baer in 1935

Max Baer (February 11, 1909 – November 21, 1959) was an American boxer of the 1930s (one-time Heavyweight Champion of the World) as well as a professional wrestler and referee, and had an occasional role on film or television. He was the brother of twice World Champion boxing contender Buddy Baer and father of actor Max Baer, Jr. (best-known as Jethro Bodine on The Beverly Hillbillies). Baer is rated #22 on Ring Magazine's list of 100 greatest punchers of all time.

On June 13, 1935, one of the greatest upsets in boxing history transpired in Long Island City, New York, as Baer fought down-and-out boxer James J. Braddock in the so-called Cinderella Man bout. Baer hardly trained for the bout. Braddock, on the other hand, was training hard. "I'm training for a fight. Not a boxing contest or a clownin' contest or a dance." he said. "Whether it goes one round or three rounds or 10 rounds, it will be a fight and a fight all the way. When you've been through what I've had to face in the last two years, a Max Baer or a Bengal tiger looks like a house pet. He might come at me with a cannon and a blackjack and he would still be a picnic compared to what I've had to face." Baer, ever the showman "brought gales of laughter from the crowd with his antics" the night he stepped between the ropes to meet Braddock. As Braddock "slipped the blue bathrobe from his pink back, he was the sentimental favorite of a Bowl crowd of 30,000, most of whom had bet their money 8-to-1 against him."

Max "undoubtedly paid the penalty for underestimating his challenger beforehand and wasting too much time clowning." At the end of 15 rounds Braddock emerged the victor in a unanimous decision, outpointing Baer 8 rounds to 6 in the "most astounding upset since John L. Sullivan went down before the thrusts of Gentleman Jim Corbett back in the nineties". Braddock took heavy hits from Baer, but kept coming at Baer until he wore Max down.

Bank on it! Quiz night debuts at Upper 90! (Quiz Bowl next Sunday!)

Just a brief reminder that Quiz Bowl II, Milwaukee's sports and pop culture triva tournament is next Sunday January 29th! Register your team now!

It was the inaugural trivia showdown at Milwaukee's new Upper 90 Sports Pub this Tuesday night, as several teams were in the house for the later-than-usual 10pm start time.

Ultimately, the winners came from the more-than-enthusiastic team of Deutsch Banks...

Their score of 48 points was actually tied for first place, but they saw off Help Us Tebow in sudden death, who just submitted to defeat by not answering at all!

Best team name went to The Piss Chubbies who were delighted with the "people's prize" accolade...

And for good measure we also got a pic of Wiscotson who were also new to the game...

The quiz time remains at 10pm for next week, with the future possibility of it moving forward to 9pm. We'll let you know if that's the case.

Next week Ryan will perform the entire quiz in a Jersey accent.

Article of the Week - Betty Lou Oliver

Elevator attendant Betty Lou Oliver
plummeted 75 stories and lived!

Betty Lou Oliver (July 9, 1925 - March 8, 1994) is best known as the 1940s elevator attendant for the Empire State Building who survived two large accidents on the same day.

Oliver was working on the 80th story of the building on July 28, 1945. On that day, due to thick fog a B-25 Mitchell bomber crashed into the north side of the Empire State Building. The plane struck the 79th floor of the building. Oliver was thrown from her post and badly burned in the accident, though she survived, while 14 others did not.

When rescuers got to her they decided to lower her via the elevator, unaware that the cables had been weakened to breaking point. Once the elevator doors closed, the cables snapped and Oliver plummeted 75 stories to the basement. Oliver survived but again had to be rescued and was later treated at the hospital for serious injuries. The thousand feet of elevator cable had fallen to the bottom of the shaft, creating a softer landing surface. The rapid compression of the air also likely helped slow the elevator's fall. This descent still stands as the Guinness World Record for the longest survived elevator fall ever recorded. Five months later, Oliver returned with an elevator inspector, who complimented her "guts" in riding the elevators to the full height of the building on that visit.

Upper 90 Teams Up with Quizmaster - Jan. 2012 Start!

Will host quiz night on Tuesdays at 10pm,
starting January 17th, 2012

Milwaukee's newest sports bar, Upper 90, will be teaming up with Quizmaster to a later-than-usual quiz night to Tuesdays in the downtown area. Trivia will debut on Tuesday January 17th, 2012 at 10 p.m. and run each week thereafter.

The bar will offer a first place and second place prize, as well as the covered "people's prize" for best team name! And specials will feature $3 PBR tall boys - although with each PBR quizzers will get a FREE shot of Tuaca. As far as food specials, there will be $2 taz sliders (mini-burgers) up for grabs, which are rumored to be very yummy!

For those new to the game, check out the Quizmaster format and rules, or stop by another location before then to get a head-start on the rest!

A host of the venue has to be announced but watch this space for an announcement soon!
